From the early 1960s to the late 1970s, members of the Girotti family in St. Catharines, Ontario made many models of molded chalkware statues, pedestals, 3D wall plaques, picture and mirror frames, and 3D chalkware wood wall plaques. They had sales agents across Canada by 1971.
The company, called Girotti Sculptured Art, also made many battery-operated wall clocks: at least three styles of fan-shaped clocks (1960s), several models of 3D chalkware wooden panel clocks (1960s/1970s), and many models of molded foamed-polymer case clocks (1970s).
The factory was located at 288 Glendale Avenue in St. Catharines. The company was in business as early as 1964 and apparently closed by 1979.
At July 2023 our museum now has two examples of fan-shaped wall clock, five different wood panel wall models, and five foamed-polymer case models (the first one donated April 2014 by the Girotti family). Pictures of these are shown in the Girotti Gallery in the Galleries section on our web site, together with some other known models from online sources.
Research on the history of this mid 20th century Canadian company was completed in late 2014. A Girotti relative found a 1971 Girotti Sculptured Art catalague that shows many different products, including fourteen wall clocks. The museum was able to scan the pages that showed the available clocks; the scans are included in the Girotti clocks Gallery.
An article about Girotti clocks was published in the Sept./Oct. 2015, No. 417 issue of the Bulletin of the Pennsylvania-based National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC).
There are nine NAWCC Chapters in Canada: Halifax, Montreal (2), Ottawa, Toronto, Belleville/Kingston, London, Calgary, and Vancouver.
